What the Bible Teaches About Baptism

INTRODUCTION... Everywhere you go people are talking about baptism. Every one has a different way, every one has a different meaning, every one has a different time. What does the Bible say?

1. WHY YOU SHOULD BE BAPTIZED!

A. Jesus said so. Matthew 28:19-20, "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world."

B . The Apostles preached and practiced it. Acts 2:41, "Then they that gladly received His word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls."

C . Jesus did it. Matthew 3:16, "And Jesus, when he was baptized went up straightway out of the water: and lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him."

2. WHO IS TO BE BAPTIZED?

Only those who are saved by receiving Christ as Saviour.

A . Acts 2:41 "Then they that gladly received His word were baptized."

B . Acts 8:36-37, "And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water: what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God."

C . Acts 16:31-33, "And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway."

3. HOW SHOULD I BE BAPTIZED?

A. The very way Jesus was baptized...By the immersion of the whole body in water. Matthew 3:16, "And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water; and lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting upon him."

Acts 8:38, "And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him."

B . Look at the words in these verses:

Baptism is unto death - verse 3

Baptism is by burial - verse 4

Baptism is planting - verse

4. WHEN SHOULD I BE BAPTIZED? As soon as you can, after you are saved!

A. Acts 2:41, "Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls."

B . Acts 16:31-33, "And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in the house. And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his house."

C . There are many who say, "Just pray about it and let God lead you and then do it." The Bible says, "Believe and be baptized."
